According to the Scaling Up methodology, people are one of the four major decisions every company must get right. Scaling a great culture with highly-engaged employees is critical to business success today, and no role plays a bigger part in that success than managers. The manager-employee relationship is one of the most impactful drivers of employee engagement. So to acknowledge the efforts of today’s outstanding people leaders, Scaling Up and Emplify are proud to present the ScaleUp Manager of the Year Award.

About the award

The ScaleUp Manager of the Year Award recognizes managers who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and the ability to engage and motivate their teams. They lead by example, empowering others to be their best and reach their full potential.

The award winners will be announced onstage at the ScaleUp Master Class in Dallas, TX on December 7-10th.

The nominations will open on Monday, July 13th.

Who Should Apply?

  • This award is meant to honor an employee who has at least one direct report and is moving the business forward in an impactful way. While not always the first to be recognized publicly, this individual demonstrates strong team leadership and critical contributions to their organization.
  • Nominations may be made by anyone in your company internally, or, externally (e.g., a Scaling Up or professional coach). 
  • We kindly ask for no self-nominations.
  • You may nominate more than one person from the same company.
  • Companies using the Scaling Up methodology are encouraged to apply, but affiliation with Scaling Up is not required.

 

Manager Qualifications

  • Been at their employer for at least 6 months.
  • Non-c-suite or executive/senior leader. Not meant for someone that leads through influence (i.e., individual contributor).
  • Someone who directly manages at least one person.
  • Has accountability, responsibility, and/or authority over their business function.
  • Business function has a measurable outcome or KPIs that the manager is held accountable to.

Qualities of an Effective Manager

The relationship between an employee and their manager is one of the most powerful drivers of engagement. The way a manager leads impacts the productivity of their team and can make or break the individual success of their direct reports.

So what truly makes a good manager great?

For this report, we analyzed the engagement data of thousands of employees and identified managers who were able to markedly improve employee engagement on their teams. We dove deeper into that data and interviewed managers to discover what made them such impactful leaders and how others can replicate those leadership qualities.
