Scaling up with a Culture of High Employee Engagement

My copy of Scaling Up by Verne Harnish looks nothing like it did when it first arrived at my door. Aside from enduring the abuse of spilled coffee and Indiana humidity, every other page is dog-eared for easy future reference, compelling passages are dressed in bright yellow highlighter and my notes in the margins make some pages appear as one, solid block of ink.

The magic of Scaling Up, I’ve found, is most people’s copy of the book resembles mine. Over time, readers weave Scaling Up’s key philosophies into the fabric of their businesses to create a living, breathing organization that would not otherwise exist. The wisdom found in Scaling Up is personal to me for this reason. It has provided the strategic framework upon which we clarified vision, strategy, and priorities for teams in every department here at Emplify. In my mind, Emplify is inseparable from the philosophies found in Scaling Up.

Since its 2014 publication, Scaling Up has gone from a business book to a global powerhouse. Author Verne Harnish and his team provide executive education and strategic planning resources to “Gazelles:” high-performance companies that grow exponentially every year while remaining agile and nimble. Anyone who has worked for or led a “Gazelle” knows this is easier said than done because complexity follows hard on the heels of growth.
